Nail Cosmetics Allergic Reactions
Symptoms
Allergic reactions to nail cosmetics around the fingers usually appear as redness and swelling of the fingertips. In individuals allergic to one or more specific acrylates direct contact with acrylate monomers produces classic allergic contact dermatitis. Allergic reactions to acrylic nails manifest in various forms affecting the skin around the nail bed and finger.
Warning
Skin experts are warning a chemical found in gel gel polish and acrylic nails can cause an allergic reaction. The chemical is called acrylate and is a common ingredient in these types of nail products. Acrylate can cause skin irritation, redness, swelling, and even blistering. In severe cases, it can even lead to anaphylaxis.

Prevention
There are a few things you can do to prevent allergic reactions to nail cosmetics:
- Patch test new products before using them on your nails. Apply a small amount of the product to a small area of skin on your forearm and wait 24 hours. If you experience any redness, swelling, or itching, do not use the product.
- Choose products that are free of acrylates. There are many nail polish and gel polish brands that do not contain acrylates.
- Wear gloves when applying nail cosmetics. This will help to prevent the chemicals from coming into contact with your skin.
