Maxwell Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Florida, died after setting himself on fire outside a New York courthouse where Donald Trump is on trial.
According to reports, Azzarello doused himself in a liquid before throwing conspiracy theory pamphlets into the air at the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse on Thursday afternoon, January 19, 2023.
The incident occurred as jury selection was underway for Trump's civil trial, in which the former president is being sued by protesters who allege they were assaulted by his security guards during a demonstration outside Trump Tower in 2015.
Azzarello sustained severe burns and was rushed to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
The motive for Azzarello's actions is unknown, but he had a history of posting conspiracy theories and anti-government rhetoric on social media.
Azzarello's death has prompted an outpouring of grief from his family and friends, many of whom are struggling to understand why he would take such a drastic action.
