Great Ormond Street surgeon investigated ‘after string of inappropriate surgeries’
Senior doctor suspended from operating and faces fitness to practise hearing after internal review
A prominent surgeon at Great Ormond Street hospital is facing a fitness to practise hearing after an internal review found he carried out a string of inappropriate operations.
The unnamed consultant, who is in his 50s, has been suspended from operating and seeing patients alone following the review into surgery outcomes at the hospital.
It is understand the review was launched after a number of concerns were raised about the consultant’s work, including the number of operations he was carrying out and their outcomes.
The General Medical Council (GMC) has confirmed it is investigating the surgeon and a hearing is due to take place later this year.
The surgeon is facing allegations of:
- Carrying out unnecessary operations
- Performing operations that were not in the best interests of patients
- Failing to obtain proper consent from patients
If found guilty of these allegations, the surgeon could face a range of penalties, including being struck off the medical register.
A spokeswoman for Great Ormond Street hospital said: “We can confirm that a consultant surgeon has been suspended from operating and seeing patients alone following an internal review into surgery outcomes.
“We take all concerns about the safety of our patients extremely seriously and have a robust system in place to investigate any issues that are raised.
“We are unable to comment further while the GMC investigation is ongoing.”
